The Battle of Adwa (First Italo-Ethiopian War)
Ethiopian forces from all provinces, ethnic and religion groups under the leadership of Emperor Menelik II surprised the world by defeating a well-trained and armed Italian invading force on Sunday 1 March 1896, near the town of Adwa, becoming one of the only two African countries to defeat a European colonial power and retain its sovereignty.
Adwa became a pre-eminent symbol of pan-Africanism.
